Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty fall to their second final loss in as many weeks. The contest started off on a good note for the Indian pair as they raced to win the first game 21-15 in just 18 minutes.

However, things soon went south as unforced errors mounted in the second as Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jee combined well to pocket it 21-11. There was no looking back from there for the Koreans as they carried forward the momentum to lead 11-6 before the change of sides in the decider.

Rankireddy and Shetty did try to fightback, winning a few points in a row to put the Koreans under pressure, but the early five-point cushion they gained was enough for the reigning world champions to sail through.

More importantly, the wait for a home champion at the India Open Super 750 continues to stretch longer. The last time an Indian won the event was when Rankireddy and Shetty in men’s doubles and Lakshya Sen in men’s singles clinched their respective titles way back in 2022, when it was still a Super 500 event.

Hello and welcome to Scroll’s coverage of Indian badminton

Just a week after India’s star men’s doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost in the final of the Malaysia Open Super 1000, the pair has another chance to earn their first title of the year.

Save for their opening round match against Chinese Taipei’s Lee Fang-Chih and Lee Fang-Jen, the Indians have not dropped a game in their run to the final. They now take on reigning world champions Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae of South Korea for the title.

The odds are stacked in favour of the in-form Indians though, who have a 4-1 record against the South Koreans, and will be buoyed by their home fans in New Delhi.
